Video of army widow goes viral

An army widow breaks down in tears over her fallen husband’s coffin on an airport tarmac. The tear-jerking video went viral on the Internet this Saturday, February 18th.

The 35-year-old man called Green Beret Shawn Thomas was murdered in a car accident on February 2nd while installed in Niger, Africa. “This was Shawn’s 8th deployment defending our freedom while doing a job that he loved,” Shawn’s memorial said. He and his wife Tara Thomas have four children: Cheyenne, Taylor, Gavin and Natylyn. The couple were living in Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Shawn’s flag-draped casket arrived at Raleigh-Durham International Airport in Morrisville, North Carolina, on Tuesday, February 14th. Lisa West Williams recorded the happenings and posted it on social media Facebook. She was a passenger on the airplane and it displays soldiers taking Shawn’s coffin off the aircraft while Tara walks over and places her hands on the U.S. flag, breaking down in tears.

Williams told WNCT-TV that Tara thanked Lisa for capturing the moment and sharing the video; she said she wanted it to be shared. “She wanted people to realize that this goes on every day,” Williams told the news channel. “There are many men and women that come home in a casket and they’ve made the ultimate sacrifice for us.”

“It was an honor to fly home with this PATRIOT! God bless his wife and family. There was not a dry eye around me,” Williams posted together with the Facebook video, which has gained more than 8 million views. In the clip, you can hear the other passengers crying as they all see Tara say her last goodbye to her late husband.

“It was heartbreaking,” Williams told WNCT. “Never seen anything like it before.”

Shawn was privileged with two Bronze Stars and four Good Conduct Medals during his service. He will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
